Sportfishing
is just part of the activities one can explore on the Big Island of Hawaii.
It's called the Big Island because of the size compared to the other Hawaiian
Islands (twice the size of all the other islands combined). It is
93 miles long and 76 miles wide.
The Big Island has the two tallest mountains of Hawaii,
Mauna Kea at 13,800 feet and Mauna Loa at 13,360 feet. During the winter
months the mountains are covered with snow (yes, snow in Hawaii). At the
southern end of Mauna Loa lies Kilauea Volcano, the world's most active
volcano which continues to erupt today.
The Big Island's population is 130,000, which
is 1/10th the entire state population. The area known as the Kona district
has a population of about 50,000. Hawaii is the only US state producing
coffee. And Kona has the longest history of coffee production in Hawaii.
Kona coffee has become one of the world's finest gourmet coffee.
Kona, located on the lee side of the Island, is
noted for a calm, sunny and dry climate. In contrast, Hilo is located on
the east side of the Island and has a very wet and windy climate. The difference
is due to the movement of trade winds which is from east to west (usually
carrying moisture). Mauna Loa proves to be an obstacle which prevents
the clouds from reaching the western side.
